Overijssel, The Netherlands
IJhorst is a beautiful village located in the charming Reest Valley region that borders on Overijssel and Drenthe. The River Reest, which originates in the peaty areas between Slagharen and Dedemsvaart and discharges into the Meppelerdiep, is the boundary river between Overijssel and Drenthe. The Reest Valley provides a good breeding ground for storks at the stork sanctuary De Lokkerij in De Wijk, which is approximately 2 km from Landal De Witte Bergen. In addition to these striking birds, there are badgers, foxes and a range of exceptional flora. And don’t forget to visit the Landgoed de Havixhorst country estate. Landal De Witte Bergen is located in this hilly woodland. From the park you can walk straight into the woods and then on through the woods of the Dutch Forestry Commission. This is a magnificent area of extensive woods and heathland, where the real nature enthusiast will be able to find peace, space and plenty of relaxation. But Drenthe is also nearby. So you can enjoy shopping in the historic city centre of Meppel with its surprising range of shops. Or visit the city centre of Hoogeveen, where you will find the largest water-based work of art in the Netherlands.
