South Holland, The Netherlands
Because countless windmills used to keep the polders dry, nowadays you can still enjoy the beauty of the typical Dutch polders in the Green Heart region, and their inhabitants. Ordinary birds but also some unexpected ones can be seen flying against vivid, overcast skies. Did you know that the flapping of storks' wings can be heard again in some villages? This region is also known as the land of lakes. Thanks to the digging of peat workers, the area now offers plenty of space for water sports. But it's not only the nature that draws people here, the region also teems with cultural opportunities! Metropolitan cities like Rotterdam and The Hague and the Cheese Market in Gouda are a few prime examples, all easily accessible from the Green Heart.
